What is Astrology

For centuries, humans have looked to the heavens for guidance. Astrology is, put simply, the study of the correlation between the astronomical positions of the planets and events on earth. Astrologers believe that the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the time of a person’s birth have a direct influence on that person’s character. These positions are thought to affect a person’s destiny, although many Astrologers feel that free will plays a large role in any individual’s life.

Wind, fire, air and water.

The elementsAstrology uses various ways to classify the zodiac signs. There are four elements in Western Astrology, and they are divided into groups of three signs each (four times three equals twelve signs): Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The elements are also known as the Triplicities, and they represent personality tendencies. The Qualities represent modes of activity or expression.

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius share this element. Fire signs are spontaneous, reactive, and assertive. If you are a Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn, you are an Earth sign. The Earth signs are reliable, practical, and sensual. The Air Signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Air signs are intellectual, detached, and fair-minded. The Water Signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water signs are fluid, emotional, and intuitive.

They roughly break down to an "initiating, active" quality called Cardinal, a "stable, durable" quality called Fixed, and a varying, changeable quality called Mutable. Each of the signs are in some ways affected by the nature of these qualities, and when mixed with their element, the core symbolism and description of the signs becomes more clear.
